In what could be an action-packed affair from west London in midweek, QPR will welcome Norwich to the capital on Wednesday night for an EFL Cup showdown.
Starting with the hosts, while QPR might have opened the 2023/24 campaign with a nightmare display as they slumped to a 4-0 drumming at the hands of Watford, the Hoops are seeking some much-needed stability this time around. However, although Gareth Ainsworth’s men might be tipped as a standout contender to find themselves at the heart of another relegation scrap this season, the former Wycombe boss did see his side claim a crucial boost last weekend. Eventually snatching a 2-1 victory away at Cardiff a few days ago, the west London outfit will be desperate to make another statement here. However, still showing some extended defensive issues, QPR will also be worried by a downbeat record against Wednesday’s opponents. Including a 3-1 defeat when they welcomed Norwich to town back in April 2021, it should be highlighted that Ainsworth’s side have failed to win any of their previous six straight meetings against the midweek guests.
As for the visitors, suffering last-gasp heartbreak away at Southampton over the weekend as they eventually had to settle for a remarkable 4-4 draw, Norwich will be seeking an immediate response here. However, although David Wagner’s men might have come under real scrutiny last season as they were forced to settle for a bottom-half finish, it is no secret that the Canaries have their sights firmly set on securing a Premier League return this time around. Opening the 2023/24 campaign with a 2-1 victory at home against Hull, the one-time Huddersfield boss should be excited by his side’s free-scoring performances in the final third. Despite still waiting to record their first clean sheet of the season, it should be noted that Norwich have mustered six goals in their back-to-back Championship appearances. With three of the last four meetings between Wednesday’s opponents finishing with both teams finding the net, we are expecting a similar outcome in west London here.
